Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee
Founded by Herod Antipas on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, Tiberias first developed in the first century CE. In the Byzantine and Early Islamic periods, it became a flourishing city with a mixed population of Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Earlier excavations focused primarily on monuments in the ancient city center. As a result, the relationship of ancient Tiberias with the lake remains far less known.
The team will be excavating the southern part of the ancient city that was probably built in the Byzantine period or the Early Islamic period. The principal aim is to better understand the long structure extending along the beach and the colonnaded building.
