With a heavy sigh, I have to respond that Deborah was not a compliment to the story or to any other person. She was a judge as the book of Judges says. Listing her as a judge and protagonist in Judges opens the door wide for comparison. As far as the remark about a “huge stretch” that “ignores volumes of contextual information, cultural norms of the time, and cross references”, I would suggest another look at the entirety of Scripture where there are numerous examples of God doing exactly that. How many times did God choose those who broke cultural norms? How many people did He call that defied contextual information? Bringing the Gentiles in is just one example of how the Lord shakes up what we think is the only way He moves.

Check out your bible. Chapter 4 and 5 is about Debra. And about comparison comparisons to who. There are no other women significant. If you don’t like the fact that Debra won the war against the Canaanite general sis era. I think you should go and debate the author. Good luck!

Hi Mark. For more than 45 years, the Biblical Archaeology Society has dealt–in a nonsectarian way–with archaeology AND Bible. From our mission statement: “BAS educates the public about archaeology and the Bible through its quarterly magazine, Biblical Archaeology Review, an award-winning website, tours and seminars, and books and DVDs.”
Our history, and online BAS Library, includes two decades of publishing Bible Review magazine, a magazine of critical interpretations of biblical texts, with articles written by Bible scholars.
Thanks for reading.

Nothing related to archeology is included in the article.

Sadly, I have to agree. Modern day re-writing of history.

Another huge stretch and rewriting of history, ignoring volumes of contextual information, cultural norms of the time, and cross references within the Holy Scriptures Canon. All in order to advance the falty illusions promoted by modern feminism. Frustrating. Why must we present characters in this account as comparisons instead of compliments?

We should try that one on for size in the 21st century. Interesting article!
